The short answer: Moringa (Moringa oleifera) is a fast-growing tree native to northern India whose leaves and seeds are used in two very different products: dried leaf powder, eaten as food or taken in capsules, and cold-pressed seed oil, used in skin and hair routines. This guide explains how each is made, how to use it and what to check before buying.

A creator shows our organic moringa oil: the oil, the dropper and how easy it is to use.

Where does moringa come from?

Moringa is native to the sub-Himalayan foothills of northern India and is now grown across South and Southeast Asia, Africa and Central America. It is often called the drumstick tree because of its long, slender seed pods, which are cooked in curries in South India.

How do leaf powder and seed oil compare?

Moringa leaf powder Moringa seed oil
Plant part Leaves, dried and milled Seeds, cold-pressed
Color and taste Bright green, grassy Pale gold, nearly scentless
Main use Food: capsules, smoothies, cooking Topical: skin, hair ends
Our product Organic Moringa Capsules, 1000 mg per 2, 120 ct Organic Moringa Oil, 2 oz or 4 fl oz

How is each made?

Leaf powder: leaves are harvested, washed, dried in the shade at low temperature to keep their green color, then milled. Seed oil: mature seeds are shelled and pressed mechanically, without heat or solvents, then filtered. Our moringa oil is cold-pressed from seeds grown in southeast India and bottled in the USA.

How do people use moringa leaf?

  • Take 2 capsules daily with water, preferably with a meal
  • Open 2 capsules into a smoothie or batter, as in our banana moringa pancakes
  • Stir into soups or dal just before serving

How do people use moringa oil?

Patch-test first if you have sensitive skin. For buying tips, see how to choose the right moringa oil.

What should you check when buying moringa?

  • The species name Moringa oleifera
  • For leaf: 100% leaf, no stems or fillers, vibrant green color
  • For oil: cold-pressed, unrefined, hexane-free, in a dark glass bottle
  • USDA Organic certification and lab verification
