Aguaje

Aguaje is the fruit of the Mauritia flexuosa palm from the Peruvian Amazon. Shop our aguaje capsules below, then read on for where it grows, how people eat it and how our capsules compare with the fresh fruit.

Aguaje: the Amazon palm fruit, explained

Aguaje (say ah-WAH-hey) is the fruit of Mauritia flexuosa, a tall palm that grows in the flooded lowland forests of the Amazon, known locally as aguajales. The same fruit is called buriti and moriche in other parts of South America. Each fruit is oval, about 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3 inches) long, with a dark red-brown peel of small overlapping scales and a thin layer of yellow-to-orange pulp around a large pit.

Where it comes from. In Peru, the Loreto region in the north is the largest production zone for aguaje. In Iquitos, the biggest city in the Peruvian Amazon, the fruit is a street-food staple. The Supplement Facts panel on our bottle lists our aguaje fruit powder as from Peru.

How it is eaten. People in the Peruvian Amazon eat the pulp fresh, or soften the fruit, mash the pulp and blend it with cold water and sweetener to make aguajina, a chilled drink. The pulp also goes into ice cream and ice pops. Published descriptions call the pulp creamy, a little sharp and a little sweet-and-sour.

Capsules or powder? Fresh aguaje is hard to find outside South America, so we offer it in one simple format: Aguaje Capsules (some shoppers call them aguaje pills). Each serving of 2 capsules holds 1,000 mg of dried aguaje fruit powder in a vegetable cellulose capsule, and each 120-count bottle holds 60 servings. The capsules carry Vegan, Non-GMO and Gluten-free marks. They do not carry a USDA Organic seal, so we don't call them organic. We don't sell loose aguaje powder right now; capsules suit people who want a measured, no-mix serving that travels well.

How to use it. The label says to take 2 capsules a day with a meal. Many people keep the bottle next to the meal they never skip. If you want to cook with the fruit itself, our aguaje explainer walks through the aguajina method step by step.

Frequently asked questions

What is aguaje?

Aguaje is the fruit of the Mauritia flexuosa palm, which grows in the flooded lowland forests of the Amazon. The fruit is oval, about 5 to 7 cm long, with a scaly dark red-brown peel and yellow-to-orange pulp.

Where does your aguaje come from?

The Supplement Facts panel on our bottle lists the aguaje fruit powder as from Peru. In Peru, the Loreto region is the largest production zone for the fruit.

What does aguaje taste like?

Published descriptions call the fresh pulp creamy, a little sharp and a little sweet-and-sour. Our capsules have no taste because the powder is sealed inside a vegetable cellulose capsule.

How do I take aguaje capsules?

The label says to take 2 capsules a day with a meal, or as recommended by your healthcare professional. Swallow them with water. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or have a medical condition, talk with your healthcare provider before use.

How many servings are in a bottle?

Each bottle holds 120 capsules. A serving is 2 capsules (1,000 mg of aguaje fruit powder), so each bottle has 60 servings.

Are the capsules vegan, gluten-free and organic?

The label carries Vegan, Non-GMO and Gluten-free marks, and the capsule shell is vegetable cellulose, not gelatin. The label does not carry a USDA Organic seal, so we don't describe our aguaje capsules as USDA Organic.

Is aguaje for curves?

Aguaje is a palm fruit traditionally eaten as food in the Peruvian Amazon. We make no claims about body shape, and our aguaje capsules are not a body-shaping product.

Do you sell aguaje powder?

Not right now. We offer aguaje as capsules only. Our aguaje explainer shows how people in Peru prepare the fresh fruit at home.
