A simple routine you can explain in one sentence is one you can keep.
Aguaje (say ah-WAH-hey) is a fruit that grows on a very tall Amazon palm.
The palm, Mauritia flexuosa, can grow past 30 meters (100 feet). The fruit is oval, with a dark red-brown peel made of tiny scales. Under the peel is a thin layer of yellow-to-orange pulp around a large pit.

In wet, swampy forest. Think standing water for part of the year.
These palm forests are called aguajales. In Peru, the largest production zone is the Loreto region in the north.
Some Indigenous peoples of the Peruvian Amazon call the palm "the tree of life."
That is from the Slow Food Foundation's Ark of Taste, which lists aguaje as a traditional food. The Yagua and Cocama-Cocamilla peoples also call it the "bread tree." Animals rely on it too. The same source notes that a tapir can get most of its food from aguaje trees.

Mostly fresh, or as a cold drink, ice cream or ice pop. In Iquitos, the biggest city in the Peruvian Amazon, it is a street-food staple.
The classic drink is aguajina. Here is how it is traditionally made:
Sources: Camino Verde (soaking); Peruvian regional cooking references for aguajina (15-minute cooking, cold water, sugar to taste).
Fresh aguaje is hard to find outside the Amazon. Our Aguaje Capsules are a different format, made for a daily routine.

Aguaje is a fruit from the Amazon lowlands. Maca is a root from the high Andes. Different plants, different places, different formats.
Some people keep both in their routine. We do not claim that one does more than the other, or that combining them does anything. We just make both easy to read.
Add either one next to your Aguaje Capsules on the Aguaje Capsules page and take 10% off that add-on (one-time purchase; the Add button applies the discount for you).
A quick checklist. Use it on any brand.

Aguaje (pronounced ah-WAH-hey) is the fruit of the Mauritia flexuosa palm, which grows in flooded forests of the Amazon called aguajales. The fruit is oval, about 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3 inches) long, with a dark red-brown peel of small scales and yellow-to-orange pulp. It is also called buriti and moriche in other parts of South America.
The palm grows in wet, swampy lowland forest across the Amazon basin. In Peru, the Loreto region is the largest production zone for the fruit, according to the Slow Food Foundation's Ark of Taste.
People eat the pulp fresh, and make it into aguajina (a cold drink), ice cream and ice pops. The hard fruit is usually softened first, by soaking in warm water for an hour or two or by cooking it for about 15 minutes, so the scaly peel comes off easily.
Published descriptions call the pulp creamy, a little sharp and a little sweet-and-sour. Our capsules have nothing to taste: the fruit powder is sealed inside a vegetable cellulose capsule.
The Supplement Facts panel lists aguaje fruit powder (Mauritia flexuosa) from Peru, 1,000 mg per serving of 2 capsules. The only other ingredient is the vegetable cellulose capsule. They are labeled vegan, non-GMO and gluten-free.
The label says to take 2 capsules per day with a meal, or as recommended by your healthcare professional. One 120-count bottle holds 60 servings.
No. Aguaje is the fruit of an Amazonian palm. Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a root vegetable from the high Andes. We sell both and do not claim that one does more than the other. See our Red Maca Powder and Organic Maca Root Capsules.
