Camu camu (Myrciaria dubia) is a small, tart berry from the Peruvian Amazon. Choose USDA Organic powder or capsules below, then read on for where it grows, how to use it and how the two forms compare.
Camu camu (say KAH-moo KAH-moo) is a small, tart, deep-red berry, Myrciaria dubia, that grows on shrubs along rivers in the Amazon rainforest. It is very tart, which is why it usually shows up dried and powdered rather than fresh. It is known as one of the richest plant sources of vitamin C.
Where ours comes from. Our camu camu is organically harvested on small farms in the Peruvian Amazon, around Pucallpa and Satipo, and our sustainability report names camu camu farmers in the Ucayali region among our long-term partners. The berries are cleaned, dried at low temperatures and ground into a fine powder. It takes about 60 pounds of fresh fruit to make 1 pound of powder.
Powder or capsules? Both are the whole organic fruit and carry the USDA Organic seal. The powder is one ingredient: 1 tsp provides 760% of the Daily Value of vitamin C, and an 8 oz pouch holds 45 servings. The capsules hold 1,000 mg of camu camu powder per serving of 2, which provides 200 mg of vitamin C (222% DV), in a vegan pullulan capsule; a 120-count bottle holds 60 servings. Choose powder for smoothies and recipes, capsules for a no-mix routine that travels well.
How to use it. Stir a teaspoon of powder into a smoothie, juice or yogurt, and pair it with sweet fruit like banana or mango to balance the tartness. Vitamin C is sensitive to heat, so add camu camu after cooking rather than baking with it. Try our camu camu smoothie or the camu camu and turmeric smoothie.
Why ours is tan, not pink. Camu camu fruit powder is naturally tan to beige. Pink powders are often atomized with maltodextrin, a filler. Ours is the whole fruit with no maltodextrin, fillers or added color, and every batch is third-party lab tested, including for heavy metals.
