Quercetin is in your salad bowl already. Nettle has been cooked as a leaf vegetable and brewed as tea for generations.

So what happens when you put both in a capsule? Here's how to read the label.

The quick answer

  • Quercetin is a dietary flavonoid found in apples, onions, tea, red grapes, cherries and berries [1].
  • Nettle (Urtica dioica) leaf is the other active, as an extract.
  • Ours lists 600 mg quercetin + 600 mg nettle leaf extract per 3 capsules, 30 servings.

Where quercetin comes from

Quercetin is a plant flavonoid. Memorial Sloan Kettering lists apples, black, green and buckwheat tea, onions, red grapes, cherries, raspberries and citrus fruits among its food sources [1].

Nettle leaf

Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) is a perennial plant. Its leaves are cooked like spinach once the sting is neutralized, and brewed as tea. Supplements use leaf or root, so check which part is listed; ours is leaf.

Reading a 600 mg + 600 mg label

The amounts are per serving, and our serving is 3 capsules. So each capsule holds about 200 mg of each. Neither ingredient has an established Daily Value, which is why the label shows an asterisk.

Who should check first

Supplement-level quercetin has limited long-term safety data. MSKCC notes a reported case of a raised INR in a man taking warfarin after he started quercetin [1]. If you take blood thinners or other medications, talk with your practitioner first.

Quercetin label checklist

  • Quercetin amount and the serving size it applies to.
  • Nettle part (leaf or root) and whether it's an extract.
  • Capsule type and other ingredients.
  • Allergen and GMO statements.
  • Medication questions answered with your practitioner [1].
