Maca Capsules vs Maca Powder: Which Format Should You Choose?

The short answer: Maca capsules and maca powder are the same food in two formats: dried maca root that you either stir into drinks and meals (powder) or swallow with water (capsules). Choose powder if you like mixing it into smoothies, oatmeal or coffee and do not mind an earthy, nutty taste; choose capsules if you want nothing to measure, mix or taste. Compare by label serving: a teaspoon of our powder is 5 g, while our USDA Organic Maca Root Capsules are 1,600 mg per 2-capsule serving.

Key takeaways

  • Same plant, different format: powder is for stirring into food, capsules are for swallowing with water.
  • Our powders are one ingredient (organic raw maca root); our tri-color capsules are raw organic maca root in a vegan pullulan capsule.
  • Label servings differ: 1 tsp (5 g) of powder vs 2 capsules (1,600 mg), so compare by the serving on each label.
  • At Nov 2, 2026 list prices, powder is about $0.25 per serving and the tri-color capsules about $0.42 per serving.
  • Our Organic Black Maca Capsules are a separate product: a 50:1 extract, not raw root.
  • Maca is a food, research is limited and we do not promise any result.

What is the difference between maca capsules and maca powder?

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a root vegetable grown high in the Peruvian Andes, in the same plant family as broccoli, radish and cabbage. People in the Andes have grown and eaten it for generations, often cooked or dried and ground into flour. Most maca sold today is the dried root ground into powder.

A maca capsule holds that same kind of powder (or, in the case of an extract, a concentrate of it) in a shell, so there is nothing to scoop. That is the whole difference: how you take it.

How do our maca capsules and maca powders compare side by side?

Every figure below comes from our product pages and labels. Price per serving is simple arithmetic on the list price and the servings per container.

How much maca is in a capsule serving compared with a teaspoon of powder?

A level teaspoon of our powder is 5 g, which is 5,000 mg. A serving of our tri-color capsules is 1,600 mg. By weight, one teaspoon of powder is therefore roughly three capsule servings. That is arithmetic, not a dosing guide: the label serving is the amount to follow for each product, and please do not go over it.

A 120-count bottle holds 60 servings of 1,600 mg, about 96 g of maca root in total. A 16 oz bag holds 454 g. Capsules cost more per gram; you are paying for portability and a no-mix routine.

When should you choose maca powder?

Mother Nature Organics USDA Organic Maca Powder, 16 oz resealable bag, raw and Peruvian

When should you choose maca capsules?

  • You want nothing to measure, mix or taste.
  • You travel, commute or keep a routine outside the kitchen.
  • You want the label figure printed per serving: 1,600 mg and 2 capsules.
  • You prefer a vegan capsule with no fillers, binders, stearates or preservatives, which is how the USDA Organic Maca Root Capsules are made.
  • You want about two months in one bottle: 60 servings at 2 capsules a day.

Where do extract capsules fit in?

Our Organic Black Maca Capsules are not the same thing as raw maca capsules. They hold 750 mg of 50:1 organic black maca root extract per capsule, plus 5 mg BioPerine® black pepper extract. If you want whole raw root, choose a powder or the tri-color capsules. The full explanation is in what 50:1 means and how to choose.

What should you check on any maca label, whatever the format?

  • The ingredient list: ours for powder is one ingredient, certified organic raw maca root.
  • The maca type: one color or a blend, and in what proportion if it is a blend.
  • Raw root or extract. They are different products with different numbers.
  • The serving size and servings per container, so you can compare bottles fairly.
  • Country of origin and organic certification. Ours is grown in Peru.

Frequently asked questions

Are maca capsules or maca powder better?

Neither is better for everyone. Both are dried maca root (Lepidium meyenii); the difference is format. Powder is stirred into food and drinks, and capsules are swallowed with water. Choose the one you will actually use each day.

Do maca capsules taste like maca powder?

No. Maca powder tastes earthy, nutty and a little like malt. In a capsule you do not taste it, which is why many people choose capsules.

Which costs less per serving, maca powder or capsules?

At our Nov 2, 2026 list prices, USDA Organic Maca Powder works out to about $0.25 per 1 tsp (5 g) serving (91 servings per 16 oz bag), and USDA Organic Maca Root Capsules about $0.42 per 2-capsule serving (60 servings per bottle). The label servings are different sizes, so this compares price per label serving, not price per gram.

Is the maca in your capsules raw?

Our USDA Organic Maca Root Capsules are raw: the bottle reads RAW and Organic Peruvian Maca Root, with red, yellow and black maca. Our Organic Black Maca Capsules are different: a 50:1 black maca root extract, not raw root.

Are your maca capsules and powders vegan?

Yes. The USDA Organic Maca Root Capsules use a vegan pullulan capsule, the Organic Black Maca Capsules use a cellulose capsule, and our maca powders are one ingredient: organic raw maca root.

Is there a best time of day to take maca?

There is no established best time, so it comes down to personal preference. Some people take it with breakfast, others with a later meal. Research on maca is limited, experiences vary, and we do not promise any result.
