The short answer: To choose a maca capsule, check four things on the label: whether it is raw root or an extract, the amount per serving and what counts as a serving, the maca color type and where it was grown, and everything in the other-ingredients line. Our USDA Organic Maca Root Capsules are raw red, yellow and black root from Peru, 1,600 mg per 2-capsule serving; our Organic Black Maca Capsules are a 50:1 black maca extract, 750 mg per capsule. Compare bottles by serving, not by capsule count or the biggest number on the front.

Key takeaways

  • First question: raw root or extract? They are different products with different numbers.
  • Second: read the serving size. Our tri-color capsules are 2 per serving; our black maca extract is 1 per serving.
  • Third: check the maca color type, the country of origin and the organic certification.
  • Fourth: read the other-ingredients line, not just the front of the bottle.
  • Our USDA Organic Maca Root Capsules are raw, organic, vegan and non-GMO; the only other ingredient is a pullulan capsule.
  • Maca is a food, research is limited and we do not promise any result.

What should a maca capsule label tell you?

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a root vegetable grown high in the Peruvian Andes, and people there have eaten it for generations, often cooked or dried and ground into flour. A good capsule label lets you check what is inside without guessing. Look for these, in this order:

  1. The form. Is it maca root (ground, dried) or a maca extract with a stated ratio?
  2. The amount per serving. In mg, with the serving size next to it.
  3. Servings per container. A 120-count bottle is 60 servings if a serving is 2 capsules.
  4. The maca type. One color or a blend of yellow, red and black.
  5. Origin and certification. Country of growth and an organic claim you can verify.
  6. The other-ingredients line. The capsule shell, and anything added.

How do our two maca capsules compare on those checks?

What is the difference between raw maca root capsules and maca extract capsules?

Root capsules hold dried, ground maca root, the same ingredient as maca powder, in a shell. Extract capsules hold a concentrate. The extract ratio tells you how much dried root went into each part of extract: at 50:1, 50 parts of root make 1 part of extract. Neither is a quality ranking. They are different products, so read the numbers as different measurements.

If you want the whole raw root, choose root capsules or maca powder. For a deeper look at ratios, read black maca extract capsules: what 50:1 means.

How do you read the mg on a maca capsule label?

  • Divide by the serving. Our tri-color capsules list 1,600 mg per 2-capsule serving, which is 800 mg per capsule.
  • Do not compare root mg to extract mg directly. 750 mg of extract is not 750 mg of root; the label says it is made from 37,500 mg of root.
  • Compare servings, not capsule counts. 120 capsules and 60 capsules can both be 60 servings.
  • Stay with the label serving. Neither bottle suggests going over it.

Which maca color should you look for in a capsule?

Yellow, red and black are color types of the same plant, named for the root. Our tri-color capsules blend all three, so you do not have to pick. Our black maca capsules use black maca alone. If you want to buy both side by side, the Black Maca + Tri-Color Maca Capsules Bundle pairs the two bottles in one order. More on the darkest color type in 11 things to know about black maca.

What other ingredients can be in maca capsules?

The other-ingredients line is where capsules differ most. Our USDA Organic Maca Root Capsules use a vegan pullulan capsule and list no fillers, binders, stearates or preservatives. Our Organic Black Maca Capsules list cellulose (capsule), rice flour powder, silica and magnesium stearate, and the 5 mg of BioPerine® black pepper extract is on the Supplement Facts panel. If you avoid black pepper extract or stearates, that line tells you which bottle to choose.

What are common mistakes when buying maca capsules?

  • Assuming "extract" and "raw root" are the same thing.
  • Comparing bottles by capsule count instead of servings.
  • Going by the front label and skipping the other-ingredients line.
  • Not checking whether "organic" is backed by certification.
  • Expecting a promise of results. Maca is a food, research is limited and experiences vary.

Who should check with a professional before taking maca capsules?

If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or have a medical condition (the tri-color capsule page names thyroid conditions specifically), talk with your healthcare provider before use. For the black maca extract, the label advises pregnant or nursing mothers, children under 18 and anyone taking prescription medication to ask a qualified professional first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between maca root capsules and maca extract capsules?

Root capsules hold dried, ground maca root. Extract capsules hold a concentrate made from the root, shown as a ratio such as 50:1. Our USDA Organic Maca Root Capsules are raw root (1,600 mg per 2 capsules); our Organic Black Maca Capsules are a 50:1 extract (750 mg per capsule, made from 37,500 mg of black maca root per the label).

What does 50:1 mean on a maca capsule?

It means 50 parts of dried root go into 1 part of extract. On our Organic Black Maca Capsules, each 750 mg capsule is made from 37,500 mg of black maca root, per the label.

Is a bigger mg number on a maca label better?

Not by itself. A root figure and an extract figure measure different things, and a serving may be 1 capsule or several. Compare the maca form, the amount per serving and the serving size together, and follow the serving on the bottle.

Which maca color is in maca capsules?

It depends on the product. Maca comes in yellow, red and black color types of the same plant. Our USDA Organic Maca Root Capsules blend red, yellow and black maca root; our Organic Black Maca Capsules are black maca only.

Are there fillers in your maca capsules?

USDA Organic Maca Root Capsules list two ingredients: organic maca root and a vegan pullulan capsule, with no fillers, binders, stearates or preservatives. Organic Black Maca Capsules list other ingredients: cellulose (capsule), rice flour powder, silica and magnesium stearate, plus 5 mg BioPerine® black pepper extract.

Where is your maca grown?

Peru. We buy our maca from growers in the Peruvian Andes, and both capsule products use Peruvian maca.
