The short answer: Black maca extract capsules contain a concentrate of black maca root, not the raw powder. Our Organic Black Maca Capsules hold 750 mg of 50:1 organic black maca root extract per veggie capsule, made from 37,500 mg of black maca roots, plus 5 mg BioPerine®. Here is what the ratio means, how it compares with raw powder and what to check before you buy.

Considering the raw powder instead of the extract capsules? A creator on the smell of our raw black maca powder and how it blends into a smoothie.

What is a 50:1 black maca extract?

An extract ratio tells you how much dried root went into the finished extract. 50:1 means 50 parts of black maca root were used to make 1 part of extract. That is why each 750 mg capsule is described on the label as made from 37,500 mg of root (750 × 50).

How is maca extract made?

Dried maca root is milled and steeped in a solvent, usually water or water and food-grade alcohol. The liquid is separated from the fiber, concentrated and dried into a fine powder. The result is far more compact than whole root, so a single capsule carries the equivalent of many teaspoons of root.

Why is BioPerine® on the label?

BioPerine® is a branded, standardized black pepper fruit extract (Piper nigrum). It is listed at 5 mg per capsule on the Supplement Facts panel. If you avoid black pepper, choose the raw powder, which is one ingredient.

What should you check on a black maca extract label?

  • The extract ratio and the root-equivalent figure, both printed
  • "Black maca" specifically, not an unnamed maca blend
  • Country of origin: ours is Peruvian
  • Full other-ingredients list: ours lists cellulose (capsule), rice flour powder, silica and magnesium stearate
  • Organic, vegan, non-GMO and gluten-free marks, and lab verification

What are common mistakes with maca extract capsules?

  • Assuming "extract" and "raw powder" are interchangeable in recipes
  • Comparing bottles by capsule count without checking the ratio
  • Taking more than the label serving: the label says 1 veggie capsule daily and not to exceed the recommended dose
