At 6:40 a.m. the kettle starts to tick. Outside it is still blue-dark. On the counter sits a kraft-paper bag, and when you tear back the reseal strip a smell rises that is half toasted oats, half warm butterscotch. That is red maca root, dug from the high grasslands of Peru, about to become the quietest five minutes of your morning.
The short answer: Red maca powder is raw maca root (Lepidium meyenii) from the red-skinned roots of the plant, dried and milled into a fine, earthy, faintly sweet powder. The easiest way to use it is a 1 tsp (5 g) serving stirred into a smoothie, oatmeal or a warm drink. Our Organic Red Maca Powder is USDA Organic, one ingredient, in a 16 oz bag with about 91 servings.

Maca is a root vegetable from the Andes, a cousin of radish and broccoli that grows where little else will: on the puna, the windswept plateau of central Peru, roughly 4,000 metres above sea level. Farmers there see frost most nights and hard sun most days. The roots come up in several skin colors, cream-yellow, red-purple and black, and red maca is simply the harvest sorted by its rosy skin.
After harvest the roots are dried, then milled into powder. Ours is raw: nothing is cooked, sweetened or blended in. Read more about where maca grows in our maca harvest season story.
Open the bag and you get malt, toasted nuts and a soft caramel note. On the tongue it is earthy, mellow and a touch sweeter than yellow maca. It does not dissolve like sugar; it disperses, like cocoa, so it loves anything blended or stirred into something warm and creamy.
A ritual works because it is small and repeatable. Here is one real-world version that takes about five minutes:
1 frozen banana, 1 cup oat milk, 1 tsp red maca, 1 tbsp cacao powder, 1 tbsp almond butter, a pinch of cinnamon. Blend 40 seconds. Thick, malty, like a chocolate milkshake that grew up in the mountains.
Cook ½ cup rolled oats in 1 cup water or milk. Take it off the heat, then stir in 1 tsp red maca, a spoon of honey and a handful of chopped walnuts. Stirring it in at the end keeps the flavor bright.
Brew a mug of coffee with a cinnamon stick and a strip of orange peel. Whisk 1 tsp red maca into 2 tbsp warm milk first so it does not clump, then pour in the coffee. It tastes like a bakery at sunrise.
Want more ideas? Many of our raw black maca powder recipes work with red maca too.
All three are the same plant; the difference is root color and, to most people, taste. Pick the one you will enjoy every morning.
